On the morning of June 27th, 2024, in the vicinity of Glencoe, Diego Martin, North Trinidad, West Indies, a surprising spectacle unfolded: an Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis – Steatornithidae), typically a nocturnal creature, was observed roosting under the trunk of a Guava tree (Psidium guajava – Myrtaceae), its stout brown body clearly visible. While these nocturnal fruit-eaters usually seek the darkness of caves during the day, this rare sighting suggests that the bird is not nesting and prefer to spend the day roosting close to its food source. It was a captivating glimpse into the adaptable nature of this enigmatic bird.
