Fugitive on the Crawl

Red-eared Slider in the Caroni Swamp” A Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) in Caroni Swamp – November 2nd, 2022. The Red-eared slider or red-eared terrapin is one of the world’s most invasive species. Like many places, its population has exploded in Trinidad, due to pet releases by former owners who grow weary of caring for the turtle when it becomes too big and aggressive to keep as a pet. This is possibly the first record of one inside the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, and we can only hope they don’t spread further there or have the same negative impact as they have had in other places.
