The Green Kingfisher is an agile and efficient fisher. From its perch, kingfishers are often very successful when hunting its prey – usually small fish. Male and females exhibit polymorphism and can easily be identified. In this photo (taken on 1 May 2022), the male (left) can be seen offering a gift of food during their mating ritual, which is readily accepted by its mate. This behaviour is referred to as “courtship feeding.” During my hours of observation, in a strange twist, I also witnessed the female offering food to the male. I consider myself very lucky to have viewed this behaviour in the wild. PS: the second show successful copulation.
